The founding of Motability in the UK in 1977 brought about monumental change to the way disabled people lived their lives. Getting to work, going shopping, visiting friends, going to the doctors, giving family members lifts and going on holiday suddenly became much easier. The scheme, established in 1977 by Lord Sterling of Plaistow and Lord Goodman, is still going strong today. The late Lord Goodman described its founding as “the most successful achievement of my career and the most fortunate thought that ever came into my head”.

What is the motability scheme?

Motability is a charitable scheme that enables people with disabilities, plus their carers and families, to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair, and currently has 600,000 customers. It affords them a government-funded mobility allowance that enables them to be able to afford new cars with adaptations and a host of added benefits and features. A huge range of vehicles and facilities are available from Ford motability car dealers, and one in five motability cars delivered to customers are Ford models. Ford is proud to have made available half a million motability cars through the scheme, offering space, comfort, versatility, accessibility and convenience without sacrificing performance or style.

What Ford cars are available?

The perks of getting a motability vehicle through the Ford scheme are as follows: disabled people can choose a brand new model every three years; the dealer will be responsible for servicing, maintenance and repairs; loss and damage protection, insurance and accident cover will be taken care of; RAC breakdown assistance and free window and windscreen repair is included; free reverse parking sensors are installed; and hassle-free adaptations can be arranged. People with disabilities, and their family members or carers can choose from a vast range of all-new vehicles. The Ford Focus, the Ford Galaxy, the Ford C-Max, the Ford S-Max, the Ford Modeo, the Ford Fiesta, the Ford B-Max, the Ford Kuga and the Ford Tourneo are all cars that are available through Ford’s motability scheme. There are Ford motability facilities available at dealerships in Andover, Dorchester, Taunton, Poole and Yeovil. A motability specialist is on hand to look after the needs of those looking for the right and most comfortable vehicle for them. She will explain how the Ford motability scheme can help and can advise on relevant offers and deals, in order to make the process as smooth as possible for customers.
